June Johnson has volunteered at Cook Children's for nearly 30 years. She's also providing for the future with a gift in her will.

June Johnson taught kindergarten for 20 years and has always had a heart for serving children. After retiring in 1989, she began looking for a volunteer opportunity that would allow her to help the children that needed her most. It's no surprise she found herself at Cook Children's. Nearly three decades later, she's still here and is now our longest-standing, active volunteer.

June began volunteering in the Bomar Library—a perfect fit for a retired educator. She's also served as a tour docent and volunteered in Psychiatry and the Intensive Care Unit waiting room, among others, but the Bomar Library has always been her home base. She volunteers there weekly and enjoys reading to patients, helping families select books to read together and encouraging the importance of family reading.

Since 1989, June has volunteered more than 10,000 hours and knitted more than 500 purple baby hats to raise awareness of shaken baby syndrome. She has established a fund in a friend's name that benefits uncompensated care, and she has included Cook Children's in her will so she'll continue to give back to Cook Children's for many generations to come.

Thank you, June, for giving so generously of yourself to our patients. You are more than a volunteer and a donor—you are family.
